brick.

who we are: sustainability

a brick is sustainable without really trying to be. it is formed from nearby soils with local labor, using relatively little energy in production yet it lasts many lifetimes. it is simple, durable and makes the most out of the energy that is embodied within. this is the same no nonsense spirit in which we approach sustainability in our work and in our lives.

we employ a reasonable and grounded approach to sustainability. we choose to live close enough to our office so that we can commute on a bicycle almost every day. our office has a shower, not because it got us an extra leed point but because it makes the bike commute more sensible. we have operable skylights in the studio so we can leave the lights off most of the day and so that our lungs are filled with fresh air. we are purposefully within walking distance of every service we need during the day ranging from one of the neighborhood cafes to the local market.

our work seeks a balance with the natural environment. while our first goal as stewards of the natural environment is to engage clients on a pragmatic, common sense level, we also possess the working knowledge of the most cutting edge sustainability systems as well. from every angle, from the most intuitive to the most highly engineered, our respect for the environment, our understanding of the economics of construction and our grounded approach allow every client we work with to achieve their sustainbility goals large or small.
